Offshore Development Process: 7 Specific Steps – Part 7

For companies considering offshore development for the first time, the journey comes with various challenges. In particular, concerns about communication stemming from language and cultural differences pose significant issues. There are also ongoing worries about whether the development quality will meet domestic standards. Additionally, many companies struggle with managing progress across time zones and remote environments.

Finding a reliable development company and ensuring cost transparency are also major concerns. Questions regarding legal contracts and the protection of intellectual property rights can serve as significant obstacles to advancing offshore development. Furthermore, it’s crucial not to overlook the impact that different cultural backgrounds can have on the project.

In this context, companies must seek out steps that lead to success amid many uncertainties and questions.

The key to successful offshore development lies in meticulous planning from the preparation stage and effective communication.

By clearly defining the project’s objectives and requirements, and by having a shared vision among all stakeholders, the potential for misaligned expectations can be minimized, allowing for smoother progress.

In this article, AIoT, which conducts offshore development in Vietnam, will introduce the last of the seven specific steps for offshore development, along with practical insights on how to proceed effectively.

Step 7: Transition to Acceptance and Maintenance Phase

Once development is complete, it’s time to move on to the acceptance work and then to the maintenance phase.

Implementation of Acceptance Work

  • Confirm consistency with the requirement definition document
  • Conduct functional testing and verify results
  • Check the achievement of non-functional requirements
  • Provide feedback and request revisions as necessary

Judging Acceptance Completion

  • Confirm achievement of acceptance criteria
  • Obtain approval from stakeholders
  • Issue the acceptance completion document
  • Process payment of the remaining balance based on the contract
Note: In the case of commissioned development, it is common to pay 50% at the start and 50% after acceptance. In the lab model, monthly billing based on man-months is typical.

Transition to Guarantee Period and Maintenance Phase

In the case of commissioned development:

  • Start of the contractually defined guarantee period (typically 3–6 months)
  • Confirm the response system for any issues that arise
  • Consider paid maintenance contracts after the guarantee period ends

In the case of lab model development:

  • Transition from the development phase to the maintenance phase
  • Review team size as necessary
  • Clarify roles and responsibilities in maintenance operations
  • Reassess regular meeting structures

It is particularly important to clarify the scope of responsibilities regarding the guarantee period and maintenance phase post-acceptance. For commissioned development, it is necessary to establish a solid agreement with the development vendor regarding the scope of responses during the guarantee period. In the case of lab model development, clarity on specific tasks during the maintenance phase is also essential.
